How to Choose the Right Tube Packaging Size

07/02/2026

The single most common ordering question we get is also the simplest to get wrong: what size tube do I need? Order a diameter too tight and the product won’t seat; too loose and it rattles and looks cheap. Get the wall thickness wrong and a beautiful tube arrives dented.

Sizing a tube comes down to three independent decisions — diameter, length, and wall — and once you separate them, spec’ing the right tube is straightforward.

Start with diameter, measured off the product

Diameter is driven by what goes inside. Measure the widest point of your product and add clearance: about 2–4mm for a snug premium fit, more if you want a foam collar or a soft insert. For a 750ml spirits bottle that means roughly a 95–105mm tube; for a lip balm, 19–21mm. When in doubt, send us the product — we measure it and build the tube around it.

Set length to the product plus caps

Length is the product height plus room for both end caps and any insert. For posters, match the print’s rolled length (A1 and A0 art needs a longer tube than A2). For gift tubes, leave headroom so the lid seats without crushing the contents. We cut to any length, so there’s no need to force your product into a stock size.

Choose wall thickness for the job

Wall is about protection and feel. A 1.5mm kraft wall is plenty for a rolled tee or poster; a 2–3mm rigid wall is what makes a beauty or spirits tube feel premium and survive retail handling. Heavier walls cost a little more per unit but prevent the dents and crush damage that make a product look mishandled on arrival.

Match the finish to the shelf

Once the structure is right, the finish sells it. Soft-touch lamination reads premium and hides fingerprints; matte is clean and modern; gloss makes color pop. Add foil or embossing where the logo lands. The structure protects the product; the finish is what earns the unboxing photo.

Key takeawaySpec diameter off the product plus 2–4mm clearance, length off the product plus caps, and wall off how much protection and premium feel you need — or just send us the product and we’ll build the tube around it.

The fastest way to get sizing right is to request a quote and tell us what goes inside — we’ll spec the tube, send a photo-real mockup in 24–48 hours, and revise it free until it’s exactly right. Learn more about how we work or browse more guides.
