Rigid Paperboard vs Kraft Tubes: Which to Choose

06/24/2026

Rigid paperboard and kraft are the two workhorses of tube packaging, and choosing between them is really a choice about what job the tube is doing: is it the product’s presentation, or its protection in the mail?

Both are paper-based, recyclable, and printable — but they read very differently in the hand and land at different price points.

Rigid paperboard: the premium presentation

A thick, spiral-wound rigid tube feels substantial and reads as part of the product. It’s the right call for beauty hero SKUs, spirits, gift sets, and anything sold on presentation, where the packaging is doing marketing work on the shelf and in unboxing content. It takes soft-touch, foil, and embossing beautifully. It costs more per unit, but for a premium product that cost buys perceived value.

Kraft: the sustainable workhorse

Natural kraft is sturdy, warm-looking, and inexpensive — the backbone of e-commerce and direct-mail shipping. It signals eco-consciousness on its own, protects rolled and slim products through transit, and takes a label or stamp cleanly. If the tube’s main job is to get a product to a customer intact at a friendly cost, kraft is usually the answer.

How the print differs

Rigid tubes are typically wrapped edge to edge in full color for a seamless, photographic look. Kraft is often decorated with an applied label, a one-color flexo print, or a stamp, keeping the raw kraft visible as part of the aesthetic. Neither is better — they’re different looks, and the right one depends on whether you want a printed surface or a branded natural material.

A quick way to decide

Ask: would a customer keep this tube, or recycle it on arrival? If keep — a gift, a display piece, a premium reveal — go rigid. If recycle — a shipping vessel that protects the product — go kraft. Many brands use both: rigid for the hero product, kraft for everyday e-commerce.

Key takeawayGo rigid when the customer keeps the tube (gifting, presentation, retail) and kraft when the tube’s job is to protect a product in the mail. Many brands use both across their range.
